Milwaukee Public Television Friends Executive Director
Milwaukee Public Television Friends (MPTV Friends), the fund raising organization for Milwaukee Public Television, seeks an Executive Director.
Proven leadership in administration, strategic and financial planning, fundraising, board development, entrepreneurial ventures, oral and written communication and commitment to diversity required. Experience in public broadcasting and familiarity with the policies and procedures of a community/college licensee is desirable.
Reporting to a volunteer Board of Directors, The Executive Director is responsible for overseeing a $6+ million annual budget, planning, leading, directing and evaluating overall management of staff of 20; administrative, programmatic, educational, development and external relations activities of the organization, as well as effective liaison with the college (licensee), community, state and national entities and Friends Board.
This position develops strategies, implements plans and oversees: on-air fundraising drives, direct in-house mail programs, telemarketing, annual televised Auction, online and e-fundraising, member benefits and events, donor acknowledgements, matching gifts, investment of endowment and operating funds, member services and the volunteer program. Position Title: Executive Director
Basic Functions: To administer and coordinate the efforts of the MPTV Friends, Inc. Primary responsibility to oversee the annual $6+ million fundraising activities of the Friends including, but not limited to, Membership, Auction, Underwriting, Major and Planned Giving, Volunteer Activities, and other appropriate undertakings. To supervise the Friends' investments in order to obtain maximum return within the investment limitations imposed by the Board of Directors. To work in close relationship with the General Manager of the television station in order to insure a good working relationship.
Reports to: The Chair of the Board of Directors of the MPTV Friends, Inc.
Major Responsibilities:
More specifically,
1. Administrative
- Provide staff support as an ex-officio non-voting member of the Board of Directors of the MPTV Friends and its working committees to include the sending of meeting notices, preparing agendas, materials, minutes, and general information in cooperation with the Chair and Committee Chairpersons.
- Analyze the potential market and develop goals and objectives for fundraising and volunteer activities to support the station's immediate and long-range mission and goals.
- Prepare an annual income/expense budget to achieve those goals and provide appropriate reports for review and evaluations by the Board of Directors and manage monthly finances to achieve those operational goals.
- Supervise all Friends' staff, (currently about 20 people)
- Serve as an ex-officio member of the PTV Committee of the Milwaukee Area Technical College (MATC) Board giving reports and updates as required.
- Nurture the existing, unique relationship between the Friends, the TV station and MATC.
2. Resource Development
- Give overall direction to the Membership Program with active participation in the on-air campaign.
- Give overall direction to the Annual Great TV Auction with active participation with the Auction Leadership Team.
- Give overall direction to Program Underwriting and grants with active participation in these areas.
- Give overall direction to Major and Planned Giving with active participation in cultivation and recognition of these most generous donors.
3. Community Relations
- Give overall direction to a professional volunteer program that effectively recruits, utilizes, and rewards volunteers.
- Promote awareness and appreciation for public television and for the educational, cultural, and public affairs mission of the station to maximize community engagement in MPTV programming and services.
- Coordinate Friends outreach efforts with station efforts in these areas to maximize community support of programming and services.
4. Fine Tuning Magazine
- Serve as the publisher of Fine Tuning Magazine and work closely with the Membership Department in its production.
- Develop strategies that leverage the magazine as a tool to acquire, renew and maximize member contributions.
5. Web Sites / E-Newsletter and E-mail programs
- Give overall direction to the websites and e-marketing efforts of the MPTV Friends in coordination with appropriate departments.
- Develop online strategies to maximize online giving.
Qualifications: Senior management position requiring a minimum of Bachelor's Degree, preferably in Marketing, Communications, or Journalism.
A minimum of six years of full-time employment fundraising with a record of strong management achievements. Public television experience a strong plus.
Compensation Range: $80,000 to $105,000

History: In 1967 when the Milwaukee Radio and Television Council elected to focus their support exclusively on public television, it was renamed the Community Broadcasting Council. In 1969, the first on-air fundraising effort was launched, The Great TV Auction, raising $67,000. The first on-air membership drive followed in 1975 raising $23,000. This visionary fundraising group then became the Channel 10 / 36 Friends in 1978 and following the station's rebranding to MPTV, is now known as the MPTV Friends.
Financial / Snapshot: Fiscal Year July 1 - June 30 On track for current FY 08 to generate revenue of $6,050,000 with direct station support payments of $2,500,000 paid to MATC For FY 07, member benefits and station support represented 73% of total expenses while fundraising / administration expenses totaled 26% of expenses.
