Volunteers are what make MPTV Friends value to the community unlimited! We understand that everyone has something unique to contribute, and we offer a variety of ways you can assist. Experience is not necessary to volunteer, just enthusiasm and commitment. We will provide training in exchange for your time and commitment. Volunteering your time is a great way to meet new people, gain valuable job experience and have some community spirited fun! Here are just a few ways you can volunteer at MPTV Friends:

Great TV Auction – 40 Years of Magic, April 25-May 3, 2008

Descriptions by Area

Telephones:  Phone Bank operators take incoming calls and bids from viewers during the Great TV Auction.  They complete the bid form and turn it in so all bids can be tabulated in the PIT area.  Training is provided during each shift. 

PIT Area:  The PITS have a variety responsibilities including, proof reading the information for the electronic boards, board managers, board organizers, online bidding, proxy bidding and much more.   Shift Times:  Same as Telephone Bank

* Commissary:  Do you like working with food?  Well if so commissary is the place for you.  Volunteers, pick-up donations of food, prepare and serve food, dishes and kitchen clean-up along with the commissary eating area and trash removal to the outside dumpsters.  Night time volunteers are always needed to insure snacks are put out and then cleaned up afterwards for the late shift.  Shift Times:  8:30 – 12:30, 12:00 – 5:00, 4:30 – 8:30 p.m., Clean-up and Close – till 10:00

* Table Staging:    Volunteers setup the displays of merchandise to be shown on air during the auction, then re-packages the merchandise and takes it back to the warehouse where it is stored for the winning bidder.  Training for table staging is traditionally scheduled during the week or two prior to the auction.  Your confirmations will alert you to the training dates and times.   Shift Times: 12:00 – 4:30, 4:00 – 8:00 or 7:30 - Sign-Off

* Pick Up and Pay, Sweepstakes & Outlet Shop:    Yes this is where the public or viewers come into the Auction site to pick up their items and pay for them.  Volunteers greet patrons, collect information, run to the warehouse to find items, serve as cashiers and finally deliver the items to our customers.  Training is required and a schedule will be made available to you during your confirmation for this area.  Volunteers are NEEDED through MAY 9 in this area.  Shift Times:  10:30 – 4:00, 3:30 – 9:00

* Confirmation Phones:  The confirmation area of the auction is where as volunteers you contact our winning bidders, verifying addresses, collecting payment information and informing them of shipping options.  This area has regular telephones with limited computer skills required.   Shift Times: 9:30 – 2:00, 2:00 – 6:00 and 6:00 – 10:00

* Warehouse:  Volunteers locate items from the various warehouse areas including general & multiples.  Note: art is located by art department volunteers.  Then during auction week these volunteers pull items to be presented on air by board from their various warehouse locations including, general, multiple and art, delivering the scheduled boards to Table Staging volunteers.  Once presented the items are returned from Table Staging and must be re-shelved in assigned locations by warehouse volunteers.    Shift Times:  12:00 – 4:30, 4:00 – 8:00 or 7:30 - Sign-Off

Off-site parking with continual shuttle service provided to the Auction Facility throughout the day.  Shuttle Service begins at 9:00a.m. Till after auction sign-off daily.

Sunday, June 1, afternoon 1:00 – 6:00, evening 5:30 – 10:30

Monday, June 2, evening 6:30 – 11:00

Tuesday, June 3, evening 6:30 – 11:00*

Wednesday, June 4, evening 6:30 – 11:00

Thursday, June 5, evening - Full

Friday – No volunteers requested

PBS Kids Day at the Zoo, - June 21, 2008

Located at the Milwaukee County Zoo, volunteers will be provided tickets to enter the zoo, but parking is on you own.  Street parking is available or the zoo has a parking lot and the cost is $10.00 per car.

Volunteers are needed to assist at informational booths located throughout the zoo grounds, promoting PBS Kids programs, MPTV Membership and volunteering.  The shift is 10:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m.

On going Volunteer  opportunities

Viewer Service Desk and Tour Guides

Located at MATC downtown, at the MPTV. Parking provided no handicap parking available.

The viewers service desk volunteers come in mornings or afternoons on weekdays. A schedule and training is provided by the viewer services department at MPTV. For more information, call volunteer services or email your request.

Office Assistant

Located at MATC downtown, at the MPTV Friends Office. Parking provided no handicap parking available.

This is a newly created volunteer position. The volunteer director will schedule these volunteers as needed once to twice a week. Volunteer responsibilities include, a basic understanding on MS Office Suite, Word, Excel, Access and Power Point, clear communication and good telephone etiquette, envelope stuffing and assisting as desired at auction, special events, and on-air membership drives.

Flexible daytime hours between 9:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m., scheduled Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursdays. A schedule may be established if desired by the volunteer and training will be provided as needed by the Volunteer Director. For more information, call volunteer services or email your request.
